Paper, Pen, and Cognitive Development Today

Even though paper and pen might seem old fashioned, they still have a strong cognitive effect especially on children compared to their technological alternatives. That doesn’t mean tech-based tools are useless, of course. But when comparisons turn into a strict “this or that” choice, we start drifting away from personal judgment, independent decisions, and the ability to evaluate tools based on their purpose and value.

Speaking for myself, when I’m writing stories, I like to take notes with paper and pen. The feeling it gives me as a writer is something else. Still, there’s nothing wrong with doing the same on a tablet or computer.

When it comes to kids and their cognitive development, it makes sense to give importance to handwriting and traditional tools but that can go hand in hand with a healthy use of technology. What really matters is whether someone can choose and use technology in a way that suits them. No one’s forced to adopt every new thing just because it’s new. With a bit of thought looking at the situation, the person, and the goal it’s definitely possible to find the right balance.
